Experience TSG

The concept of Virtual Design Construction has existed in the industry for over 15 years. With the creation and influx of innovative technology, we are tasked with exploring and reinventing our process, finding new ways to improve our overall workflow and execution. This continuous improvement is critical as our industry becomes more dependent on automation and software programs that imbed intelligence into project delivery. When used effectively, these techniques enhance the construction process, reducing labor and ensuring quality.

When our VP of Preconstruction, Ross Alkhayri joined The Superior Group in 2018, the VDC team consisted of about 40 members. Adding more than 50% in 2+ years, the team has grown to 62 current people with varying roles. These positions range from VDC project coordinators, who are electricians by trade and produce 2D layouts based on design drawings, to BIM operators; taking these layouts from the coordinators and converting them into 3D models.

VDC Is a complete process, and the team has a mission to take project documents provided to our team and produce a clash free 3D model. In order to complete this mission with precision and efficiency, the team needs to closely collaborate with all of our teams at The Superior Group, and additionally the other trade contractors. This is to ensure that there aren’t any conflicts between electrical elements and other trade essentials (HVAC ducts, flooring, ceiling columns, etc).

It takes a strategic vision to improve the way we build. Couple that with an all-star team of modelers and coordinators and we will continue to drive successful results for our customers and the projects we help deliver for them.

Joining the apprenticeship program was not an obvious career decision for Paul Pratt. Having grown up in Southern Ohio on a 600-acre dairy farm and receiving an English degree from The Ohio State University in 1997, Paul envisioned a different professional track. Deterred by the cost of a graduate program, and a realization that a masters degree was not where his true passion lied, Paul decided to join the trade. Upon completion of the program, Paul was a recipient of the Coleman award for receiving the highest GPA in his class, a true testament to his dedication to the program. To this day, Paul is glad he stepped outside of his comfort zone in pursuit of a career in construction, and is our spotlighted employee for June. He is currently an important member of our Enterprise services team as an Electrical Service Technician.

Paul performs fires alarm programming and installations from his service van. “I love that I can perform a project from start to finish myself,” articulates Paul. He emphasizes that self-motivation is the biggest part of his role at The Superior Group. “I take pride in my work, and when I arrive on site. I’ve been pretty tenacious in my pursuits. It’s a good feeling to be the last line of defense to solve some of these tasks for the customer.”

Paul is a lover of the outdoors. He enjoys rock climbing, hiking, trail running, and currently working on a home renovation project on the property he once grew up on. Paul has been devoted to The Superior Group family for over 20 years. “Paul is extremely loyal. He demonstrates an impressive level of attention to detail, he is customer oriented, a good communicator and an all-around genuine person,” says VP Bob Shonkwiler.

A once reluctant young adult, Paul has truly gained a passion for this industry. Paul’s career has come full circle, in that he now teaches the fire alarm’s course at the apprenticeship program. Showing up is half of the battle, and if you do that and put forth a daily effort in everything you do, you will make it in this trade.” We are fortunate to have someone like Paul on our team, and hope to have him for at least 20 more years.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its compounding effects have increased the prevalence of mental health in the construction industry. Construction workers can be exposed to scenarios that can lead to high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Instead of ignoring this alarming truth, we’d like to provide our team members with the necessary resources in order to combat feelings of helplessness, isolation, or loss of control. If you or a colleague are experiencing similar feelings, know that you are not alone. Please email: HR@superiorgroup.net for ways we can provide direct assistance.

Amy Stires, our spotlighted employee for the month of May, received a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Wilmington College. Amy was working in retail when she was hungry for a change and able to secure a paralegal position, with a concentration in personal injury. Although she never envisioned this career path, she hoped to expand on her capabilities and the move to TSG excited her. Amy joined The Superior Group as an Executive Assistant in August of 2019. Her background working in a law firm, paired with the need within our organization, accelerated her role into our Contracts Coordinator position.

Amy oversees contract review and coordination, risk mitigation, our insurance and surety and bonding programs, protects our lien rights, manages our corporate registrations and project prequalifications, amongst many other legal and administrative duties. Amy ensures that we are contracted fairly, protecting our entire organization, and solidifying herself as a highly respected member of our team.

Executive Vice President, Jerry Kaltenbach, works closely alongside Amy and appreciates that “she is meticulous in seeing her projects through, is entirely accessible to all of the teams she supports, and follows up with team members to ensure their tasks are being completed. She has a high level of accountability and work ethic, and proactively looks to help where there is a need. Amy is driven, and not afraid to ask questions.”

Amy loves spending quality time with her husband and two-year-old son, Jack. After pandemic restrictions are lifted, she is eager to attend her first rock music concert. She is a self-proclaimed nerd at heart, superhero fan, and lover of OSU football.

“Making sure we’re process compliant and making sure I’m driving those processes accurately and proficiently is important,” says Amy. “I am fortunate to be a part of a team that is ambitious, and I feel lucky to be here and be given the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Thank you for continuing to #ReachHigher2021 Amy!

April Team Member Spotlight: Brian Battin

Amidst a global pandemic, Brian was hesitant to make a career transition from a stable position he once enjoyed for a new opportunity with The Superior Group. In May 2020, he decided to go for it as a QA manager within our Advanced Logistics Facility (ALF). In such a short time with our organization, Brian has proven to be an incredible asset to the team. His manufacturing background coupled with a desire to engage, allows him to “bring a certain flavor to our team, and a different skillset to the construction industry,” VP of Construction Process and Innovation Leo Poupart states. “He is actively involved in advancing our team in a positive direction. He brings enthusiasm and excitement to the workplace, always aiming to see how he can drive value not just in his role but on the construction side of the business as well.”

Brian spends the majority of his focus on prefabricated and modular initiatives supporting a wide range of projects for the organization. Brian believes that having the knowledge of quality tools, a skillset to identify a product’s critical components, being able to determine the root cause of any nonconformances, and the ability to create and apply corrective action to drive continuous improvements all allow him to excel in his role as a Quality Assurance Manager.

When he is not focusing on quality assurance at ALF, he is an avid golfer, enjoys riding his Harley, and as travel restrictions are lifting he greatly looks forward to getting back to cruising the Caribbean with his wife.

Brian has spent much of his career in manufacturing facilities, not on construction sites. He articulates that “the mindset and approach to completing tasks between both are unique. Trying to merge the two has proven to be challenging but rewarding.
