Experience TSG

The COVID-19 pandemic and it’s compounding effects have increased the prevalence of mental health in the construction industry. Construction workers can be exposed to scenarios that can lead to high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. Instead of ignoring this alarming truth, we’d like to provide our team members with the necessary resources in order to combat feelings of helplessness, isolation, or loss of control. If you or a colleague are experiencing similar feelings, know that you are not alone. Please email: HR@superiorgroup.net for ways we can provide direct assistance.

Amy Stires, our spotlighted employee for the month of May, received a Bachelor’s degree in graphic design from Wilmington College. Amy was working in retail when she was hungry for a change and able to secure a paralegal position, with a concentration in personal injury. Although she never envisioned this career path, she hoped to expand on her capabilities and the move to TSG excited her. Amy joined The Superior Group as an Executive Assistant in August of 2019. Her background working in a law firm, paired with the need within our organization, accelerated her role into our Contracts Coordinator position.

Amy oversees contract review and coordination, risk mitigation, our insurance and surety and bonding programs, protects our lien rights, manages our corporate registrations and project prequalifications, amongst many other legal and administrative duties. Amy ensures that we are contracted fairly, protecting our entire organization, and solidifying herself as a highly respected member of our team.

Executive Vice President, Jerry Kaltenbach, works closely alongside Amy and appreciates that “she is meticulous in seeing her projects through, is entirely accessible to all of the teams she supports, and follows up with team members to ensure their tasks are being completed. She has a high level of accountability and work ethic, and proactively looks to help where there is a need. Amy is driven, and not afraid to ask questions.”

Amy loves spending quality time with her husband and two-year-old son, Jack. After pandemic restrictions are lifted, she is eager to attend her first rock music concert. She is a self-proclaimed nerd at heart, superhero fan, and lover of OSU football.

“Making sure we’re process compliant and making sure I’m driving those processes accurately and proficiently is important,” says Amy. “I am fortunate to be a part of a team that is ambitious, and I feel lucky to be here and be given the opportunities I’ve been given.”

Thank you for continuing to #ReachHigher2021 Amy!

April Team Member Spotlight: Brian Battin

Amidst a global pandemic, Brian was hesitant to make a career transition from a stable position he once enjoyed for a new opportunity with The Superior Group. In May 2020, he decided to go for it as a QA manager within our Advanced Logistics Facility (ALF). In such a short time with our organization, Brian has proven to be an incredible asset to the team. His manufacturing background coupled with a desire to engage, allows him to “bring a certain flavor to our team, and a different skillset to the construction industry,” VP of Construction Process and Innovation Leo Poupart states. “He is actively involved in advancing our team in a positive direction. He brings enthusiasm and excitement to the workplace, always aiming to see how he can drive value not just in his role but on the construction side of the business as well.”

Brian spends the majority of his focus on prefabricated and modular initiatives supporting a wide range of projects for the organization. Brian believes that having the knowledge of quality tools, a skillset to identify a product’s critical components, being able to determine the root cause of any nonconformances, and the ability to create and apply corrective action to drive continuous improvements all allow him to excel in his role as a Quality Assurance Manager.

When he is not focusing on quality assurance at ALF, he is an avid golfer, enjoys riding his Harley, and as travel restrictions are lifting he greatly looks forward to getting back to cruising the Caribbean with his wife.

Brian has spent much of his career in manufacturing facilities, not on construction sites. He articulates that “the mindset and approach to completing tasks between both are unique. Trying to merge the two has proven to be challenging but rewarding.

As we are nearing the end of what seems like a never ending pandemic, we have a lot to be grateful for at The Superior Group. We’ve come out stronger as a company, more unified and tenacious. Unfortunately there are many business and people that may not have been as fortunate. Some of our neighbors are continuing to struggle – a majority of them being seniors and children. For our final feature of our Women in Construction series, we would like to recognize Amy Kirby. Amy is a QA/QC foreman at project Mustang. Amy and her father were once doing repairs and a partial remodel of their home when she decided that it was what she truly enjoyed. This lead her to pursue electrical work in trade school/high school and participate in the student partnership program. Amy officially started her construction career at The Superior Group in 2010, and we thank her for long standing commitment and tenacity!

Today during our women in construction series, we are featuring Andrea Scott. Andrea is our Revenue Manager, and based at our new HQ. She deems herself incredibly fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time regarding her career path. Many years ago she found herself working for a stainless steel fabrication company on the accounting team. That role lead her to the accounting team with a mechanical contractor, where she worked for over 12 years. She joined the TSG family just over 5 years ago. Thank you Andrea!

This week is NAWIC’s women in construction week. Women make up 50% of the population but currently only 9% of the construction industry. This statistic is one we are deliberately working on improving. We’d like to place an emphasis on opportunity, growth, and leadership for females within our organization and industry. This is also a time to give back to our local community.

This week we would like to acknowledge some of our female leaders, share their stories, and learn about their individual paths into the industry. Today we are featuring Electrical Foreman, Jill Connor.

Jill is currently a controls foreman at Crew Stadium. She grew up working around her dad and grandfather's retail design business; drafting in AutoCAD and going on site visits with them. She always loved design and building. After she graduated with a degree in Art Education, she decided to switch paths and join the union a year later.

Today on #WorldEngineeringDay we celebrate the creative minds that make up our Engineering team! #reachhigher #MaskUp #electricalengineering ...

A lot of exciting growth and collaboration have taken place within our Engineering team in a rather short period of time. An incredibly valuable asset to this team, and someone who has been a part of that growth and transformation into a 20-member department, is our Electrical Engineer, Jesus Aguilar.

Having lived in Mexico for 11 years, Jesus and his family moved to Columbus, OH for an improved education and broader opportunities. Jesus began sixth grade in Ohio without knowing English and had to adjust to an entirely new culture at a young age. Fast forward to 2019, Jesus graduated from Ohio State with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a minor in Computer and Information Science. Jesus began his career with us as an engineering intern while in school, and started as a full-time Electrical Engineer upon graduation. Over the past 2 years with TSG, power systems studies and building simulated models have been his primary focus. PSS is a unique solution developed to analyze a project and maximize efficiency of that project under varying conditions. This is a unique solution we can provide to our customers by having these resources in house, and Jesus spends a significant amount of time on this focus.

“Jesus has a lot of curiosity and a tactical mind. If he doesn’t know something, he spends great deal of time researching the topic.” says Jim Filippi, VP of Engineering. “He takes a lot of initiative and has extreme drive. He is a self-thinker and passionate about his work.” When Jesus is not working on engineering efforts, he can be found outdoors hiking, rock-climbing or traveling with friends.

What excites him about his role? his fascination with “how minute things can have a compounding effect” on projects. “I’ve found even after 2 years how drastically things change and how you need to get creative and adapt to all of the changes. You need to look for ways to be sharp and stay one step ahead in this industry.” We are pleased to have Jesus as our spotlighted employee this month.
